A Secret Key to Personal and Professional Growth: Being in the Right Room

In Proverbs 27:17 (NLT) it states:  “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”  These words by King Solomon are as true today as they were almost 3000 years ago.

In an age where getting “in a room” with someone is sometimes difficult, I find it is even more important to be in the right room so you can continue to grow your knowledge and skill.

During the week of May 16, I had the honor and great fortune of meeting with award-winning author, Bob Burg and twelve other entrepreneurs at the Go-Giver Sales Academy in Orlando — talk about talent!

Each entrepreneur brought their own unique experiences and perspectives to share. During the two-and-a-half days we spent together, we all shared stories, brainstormed ideas and generated friendships that I hope will last a long time.

More importantly though, this experience helped me expand outside of the bubble (re: content loop) we so often get stuck in, especially after a year where we didn’t get to interact with others as much as we normally would. During our time together at the Go-Giver Sales Academy, these entrepreneurs challenged me to reassess the dusty filing cabinets I’d shoved to the back of my brain, and unlock forgotten or untapped potential.

At the end of the Academy, after each of us shared our story, presented a unique business problem and received feedback on how to expand and grow — the tables were turned, and each entrepreneur was essentially “roasted” by the other participants. We were told by our well-accomplished peers what they appreciated, respected and loved about us, we were affirmed on our unique talents, and we were encouraged to continue our quests — with a pledge and support from our peers.

This experience reinforces my belief that being in the right room is vital for continued personal and professional growth.

No matter where you may find yourself on your personal and professional growth journey, make a conscious effort to get in a room where you can expand your thinking.  We are all only as good as the people we have around us — surrounding yourself with industry leaders and creative thinkers from a diverse background is a sure-fire way to improve yourself!

“David has been the administrative director for First Shot for the last 4 years, and before that he was an active board member. His leadership has helped take our non-profit up several levels. His management of the financial, marketing, and operational aspects has enabled the organization to grow in the number of people and markets we serve and how much we have to spend on those markets. He has developed our strategies on social media, grant-writing, and the development of the First Shot STEM Academy which allows us to provide STEM education after school programs to kids that would never have that chance. With any business challenge, he can figure out a solution and has the connections to make it happen!”
